Obituary for John J. Strzempko

South Hadley, John J. Strzempko, 89, died peacefully after a brief illness on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at Holyoke Medical Center. He was born in Holyoke on February 16, 1928 and was the son of Joseph and Mary Strzempko. John proudly served his country as a Tank Commander in the US Army in the 169th Infantry Regiment, 43rd Inf. Division during the Korean War. He was a graduate of South Hadley High School, class of 1948, and furthered his education by earning an Associates Degree from Holyoke Community College. He was employed by the former Texon Company, retiring after 37 years of service. John was also employed at the Hampshire County Court House for many years. He married the love of his life, Mary Ellen (Begley), on May 25, 1957 and they shared 60 wonderful years together. He was a former longtime communicant of Mater Dolorosa Church. In his leisure, he enjoyed building model airplanes, stained glass artwork, oil painting and riding his tractor. John will be forever remembered by his wife, Mary Ellen, along with their son Jack and his wife Teresa of Ashburnham, MA, and grandson, Dylan. His two sisters, Emily Zoladz of Pittsfield and Jean Kurdziel of South Hadley and many nieces and nephews also survive him. Besides his parents, five brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude for the love and compassion provided to John by his nephews, Mitchell, Leonard and Walter Pietras. A Celebration of John's Life will be on Thursday, December 7 at 9:30 a.m. at Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home, 646 Newton St.. Burial with military honors will follow at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Calling hours are on Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Donations in his memory may be made to The Soldier's Home In Holyoke, Outpatient Department, 110 Cherry St., Holyoke, MA 01040.
